Abstract
This study was planned to determine the subjective or objective refraction under 2% cyclogyl (Schieffelin, & Co) among 557 Korean children (292 boys and 258 girls) in Su-Won area age of 7 to 12 years. Brightness (illumination) of 6 class rooms out of 12 in the primary school was measured with a sight meter(Western model 703-60, type 7, Weston Co) and a sun light illumination meter(Western model 756, Weston Co).
1. Among 557 children, error was 88.05% and emmetropie 11.93%
2. As to the distribution of refractive errors 65. 58% was hyperopic refractive and 34. 42% myopic refractive.
3. The incidence of each refractive errors was the follwoing order: hyperopia 55.51%, myopia 21.53%, compound myopic astigmatism 7.14%, simple hyperopic astigmatism 6.59%, simple myopic astigmatism 5.51%, compound hyperopic astigmatism 2.92%, and mixed astigmatism 0. 72%.
4. The incidence of refractive errors in relation to sex reveals 48.07% of male and 339.98% of male, showing a slight predominance of male; while the incidence of myopic refractive error reveals 55. 52% of male.
5. The incidence of refractive errors in relation to age reveals the myopic refractive error begins to increase from the age of 7 years and a sharp rising at the age of 9, there after a slow increase while the hyperopic refractive error begins to decrease from 96. 9% at the age of 7 years reaching to 33. 34% at the age of 12 years. The greatest incidence of refractive error was found at the of 8 years.
6. Emmetropia was most frequent at the age 9 years and thereafter tends to decrease.
7. Hyperopic refractive error under 1.00 D was 64.85% and myopic refractive error under 1.00 D was 27.00% 8. As to the type of astigmatism, "with the rule" was 61.61 %, "against rule" 35.92% . , "oblique" 2.67% and mixed astigmatism 0.72% only.
9. The brightness of classroooms reveals 1425 F. C. at the window side, 46 F. C. at the center and the corridor side; averaging 498.2 F. C. in general. The daylight factor measured at the same time was average 6.5%
